I guess what I am thinking is what the impact of training might have on ratings over time. It seems to me this will/might lead to divergence from real life - so then why bother with real life.
Just putting out thoughts and challenges out there, and at the end of the day happy to operate within what ever the framework is.
I do feel however that scouting should be restricted to X number per season per team- otherwise I think it will get stupid with the comm getting many requests.
BUT most importantly that whilst a team might get first dibs on a scouted player - that this shouldn't be at the exclusion of other teams then putting in an higher offer.

I think the point was so that he didnt have to make up names and had some something to base the players ratings on. I must admit, I'd have quite liked it to be completely custom but at the end of the day its not really practical.
There's always grid-iron hehe

Thanks for the replys so far, here are my additional thoughts:
Ratings - As with the rest of the DFL ratings these are based on a my opinion of a players real life ability although they may not reflect their actual strengths and weaknesses. The Michael Vick point is a good one but, thankfully, he is an exception.
Free agents listings - The issue here is time and workload. For me to list every NFL player not in the DFL would take an age.
Limits - I'm not really that fussed over limits. Most of the free agent guys will not be anything special and as Jay has pointed out this method allows us to build a database bit by bit rather than have me spending days doing it!
Bidding - When a player is scouted his details will be available for every owner to see. I'm quite happy to reflect real life and have a bidding war for their services with say a 48 hour deadline.
I'd also like to add some clarity to the line between the DFL and reality. We have started off with current NFL rosters and this years draft will reflect the NFL draft in terms of players and ratings. From then on the lines become blurred. As has been pointed out the training of players will have an influence althoug the chances of a 2/1 guy turning into a 4/4 overnight are very remote! The bigger issue though is that we will probably only have a 2 week break between seasons meaning that after this year it won't really be possible to have fully accurate drafts. Of course I can continue to research college and high school football but grading these players accurately will be more difficult.
As has been said, next year we will have a raft of off-contract players in our free agents database. This year I expect recruiting to be pretty slow and most of the guys not currently at DFL teams have been left out as they are nowhere near starting spots.

How do i tell my scouts to scout a certain player?
I don't think many will be picked up anyhow cause we are strapped to keep the players we have. This info for the off season FA will be crazy to figure out who is and who isn't a fa and find their stats.

Any player who isnt in a squad is a free agent. But the Boss isnt going to just rate all of them cause as he said, it would take an age. So basically, this method ensures that only players who GMs are interested in will be rated.
I assume that the pool will be in a thread so that it can be updated as players are requested (via PM/email?) after that I guess that after that you either declare that you've signed them or you don't.
Bidding war would be awsome in a forum (using the forum clock too). Obviously a condition is going to be that you have enough to pay off the player he will be replacing and sign the new one so there's no chance of it getting out of hand.
Just to clarify, will the Scouting team have first dibs?

im still struggling on how we are going to do the draft on the fa discusion tho i dont think we should have a pool of players as i think this will be a hell of alot off work for the comish i agree with the fact we scout players say maby 1 player a week or somthing and then the scouting team has first dibs on the player

Just via the forum I reckon. First post in the thread has all the potential picks, you have a deadline to choose your pick, its then crossed off the list.

Just to clarify a few things:
1) You can scout any player who is not attached to a DFL team as they are all classed as free agents.
2) The scout report would be published on the forum so all teams can see it.
3) A bidding war would then be held for the player via the forum.
4) The player decides who he wishes to join but if no bids are made he remains a free agent until someone wants to pick him up.
Regarding the draft, that will also be run via the forum. We'll agree upon a time that suits the majority of people and run it in real time.

when do we start with the scouting etc/ Well for me it won't happened until I have enough headroom where I can drop a player (at a cost to cap space) and have enough left to take a new player on. Having said that this might energise the trading market if some great (?) FA's come up. Some fast dealing might be required.

Thanks for all of your input - I have finalised and will release them shortly. Scouting can then commence immediately.
